Salt Spring Island

Hugs all around

I just had a nice chat on the phone with my kids. I've had a chance to miss them this weekend, while I've been "working" in New York City, such a "boring" and "uninteresting" place.

Anyway, it's funny how when you are removed from children, they become super cute. I'm not saying they can't be cute when you are near them, but there's something about hearing a 5 year old's voice over the phone, hearing them inquire, "mom, where are you? when are you coming back? Can I give you a big hug when you get back?  Can we cuddle for 25 minutes when you come back?" that makes you really really MISS them.

I've said it before, and I'll say it now again.  Being away from my kids brings a real clarity of mind. I can see what I need to improve, how I can help them, how I can understand them better. And how I can be less of a jerk. I love that feeling. It's not one I have very often!

I'm excited to see them tomorrow, get back into the homeschooling, the reading of Harry Potter, the daily cuddles.  And I can't wait to give Tyler a gigantanormous hug!

He drove 32 hours across the country with the two littles. I think he'll really be needing a hug.

More from our really, really fun camping trip across Canada, specifically Salt Spring Island.

It was a little worriesome camping right by a large ocean. We felt like we had to keep an eye on the kids always.  After we "made" lunch one day, I couldn't spot the kids- and I found them right under our cliff, plotting together.

salty springs

Over on the west coast, in Canada, is a very cool island. A hippie type of island, where everyone is nice and watches out for each other.

We camped there in our tent mansion. It looked like this.

Cold and Rocky, thankyouverymuch

When assembling our camping gear for the next leg of the trip, I carefully hurriedly stuff items into the camping suitcase.  Sleeping bags, jackets, can opener, sleeping pads...

About those sleeping pads. Our kids have two sets. One that is lightweight and self- inflatable, for our backpacking trips. And one that is thicker and you have to blow up.  Whenever we are not backpacking, Tyler and I like to think we are being nice and sweet by blowing up the thicker mats, and daydream of our kidlets slumbering peacefully on their cushy soft beds wrapped tight in a mummy sack.

In reality, we blow up the mats, tuck them in, give them a kiss, and they roll off. Onto the hard, cold, rocky ground.

They like it there.

Yes, they like it. I have repeatedly tried to get them to sleep ON the mat, not beside it- but this, THIS is a direct quote from Isaac:

"I really like putting my face on the ground. No sleeping mat for me, thank you."

Oh. Ok.

From Victoria  and Saltspring Island, BC. Go there. Go there now.
