Am I a cat lady?

I apologize in advance for yet another pet related link. But this one is too funny not to share. Yes, it involves cats. Not for everyone :)

King Midas

A favorite pastime of our kids' while driving is to listen to podcasts. There is one podcast, titled "Storynory" which they particularly love, in which each podcast covers a new fairytale or story that the kids enjoy adding to their internal story arsenal. Isabelle, for one, has told me that when she's bored and for whatever reason can't do what she'd like to be doing, she will tell herself the stories again in her mind. Of course this makes us very happy as parents, I'm not exactly sure why, but it brings me happiness to know that her brain is packed full of stories.

(Tangent: a few nights ago as we were driving into Manhattan, we put on a StoryNory of Rip Van Winkle. To be honest, I thought the narrator was a bit drab-voiced and I found my thoughts wandering off, but the kids were riveted. Conclusion: I'm simpler minded.)

I believe that one of these podcasts told the story of King Midas. Belle found the story fascinating yet unfortunate- to have all that gold, yet, to have everything you loved taken away because you turned it to gold by merely touching it? Terrible conundrum.

In my head I was thinking about how great the moral of this story is. Unfortunately for the kids, I'm always preaching about how money doesn't buy happiness, how greed can destroy, etc. So I was pleased to now add to my boring collection of lectures this lovely story.

I should have seen this coming, but Belle, ever too quick and crafty, commented, "Mom, I don't understand? If King Midas' wish for things to turn to gold to come true, why couldn't he also have wished for a pair of gloves that would turn things he didn't want gold back into normal?

That's what I call a Fail to Understand the Moral predicament.

Arm Rests

I had prepared to write a post about elbow etiquette.  A very nuanced discussion on the art of sharing an armrest.

You see, last time we flew to Australia, there was a man that had no idea about proper armrest etiquette.  I was on the aisle.  Wendy was at my side.  This goober was draped over her armrest.

I really wanted to tell him off.  Wendy thought it would be awkward to sit right by someone for another fifteen hours that I had just chewed out.  Pansy.

This time, I decided to deal with my rage midflight by posting about it.  I had some really biting material.  All of you armrest hoggers would hold your head in shame.  But something happened that changed my life forever.  Replaced my bitter rage with love for all mankind.

The sky couch.

What sweet goodness is this?  Exactly.

Remember when you were a kid and thought, you know what would be awesome?  If this couch that I was sitting on would fly.  Don’t pretend that you didn’t wish for this.  It is unseemly.

Well, friend, it has happened.  It has really happened.

Air New Zealand, you beautiful thing.

We boarded our flight at 11:00 p.m.  Red eye.  Last time we had done the same.  The flight had been packed.  The hogger kept us up.  It was not good.

This time we entered an almost empty cavern.

After takeoff, the stewardess came by and told us we were welcome to lay down on the empty couch.

Ahh, how cute, they call chairs couches.  Kiwis, you are cute.

But, laying down on an airline seat, unlikely.

She then performed some voodoo on a row of seats to convert them into a couch.

A flying miracle couch.

Isaac curled up with Wendy on one row.  Isabelle and I took another.

I drifted off to sleep.

I was awakened by a full blown hobbit attack.  The creature was both vicious and insanely quick.  I was punched and kicked 187 times in the space of ten seconds.

Entirely awake now, I realized that it was Isabelle, not a hobbit.  I did not realize how she moved so quickly or why she hit me so repeatedly.  I moved to my own sky couch and slept another eight hours.

Best flight ever.

Big Sur (state parks) and Pinnacles (national park)

Big Sur, I do not understand your name, but I do think that you are pretty.

You have really nice beaches.  Your water is cold, but it is also clear.  You made a great starting point.

Pinnacles, your name is super cool.  You are not quite as pretty as Big Sur, but what you lack in looks, you make up for in stubborn stick-to-it-ivenessstuff.  Sure, pinnacles, maybe this talking to you as if you had a personality has lead to my own confusion, but still.

You are small, and not well known, but you are still really cool.  For a national monument.  burn.

Here are some images from our Big Sur/Pinnacles trip before we left. We will catch up- soon.
