Another game

We got some good feedback on sharing that mind game for the iPad last week, so I thought I'd share one more that my good friend Reyna just shared with me.

Want to "secretly teach kids algebra," as the app claims?  Check out Dragon Box for the iPhone and iPad. We've only been on it for about 1 hour total but the kids do love it, sure enough.

I mean, sure-- I'm no educator or anything so take these recommendations with a very large grain of salt- but this is a good one.

I think my kids' brains look bigger already. Hahaha.

b&w world

One of our favorite parts of homeschool is the creative writing the kids do.  I like to make up topics for them to write about, and reading through their old journals of stories and descriptions is endlessly funny and entertaining.

Last week I gave Isaac a topic:  What if everything was black and white? Nobody could see color, at all. I asked him to write about how he would feel and how things would be different.

I went to walk the dog, and when I got back, Isaac was at the door looking worried.

"Did you finish?" I asked.

"Mom," Isaac replied. "I can't do it. Thinking of a black and white world is so sad and heartbreaking that I am getting really stressed out!  Can I write about how fluffy the dog is instead?"

Aw man. That little guy is sweet.

Tyler's parents are kind enough to let us drop by their house in Southern California and stay for days on end without complaint. At least no audible complaints...

In their home there are quite a few chiming clocks. One morning Belle was up early reading 1,000 books in their book nook as usual. When I finally got up and found her, she said, "MOM, hours are just flying by! I am having fun reading, I guess. I keep hearing the clock chime the hour, it has chimed like 7 times! Seven hours I've been awake!"

I then broke the news to her that the clocks chime every 15 minutes.  You gotta love the 8 year old brain.

JK Rowling

This past weekend, our family finished reading the entire Harry Potter series. Being the nerds we are, at least 3 out of 4 of us felt a bit like crying that it was over.

The kids couldn't quite seem to understand why Ms. J.K. Rowling would just... stop.  Why stop writing such a great story?  Isaac took it particularly hard.  He suggested that perhaps Ms. JK should invite us over for lunch (we are a bit spoiled, we are invited to lunch at strangers' homes quite frequently, or, we invite ourselves over...) and, as Isaac put it, "we could eat and brainstorm and just talk about new plot."

Yeah, I do realize that there are a lot of kid-stories here lately, but.... what do you do.
