For over two years now Tyler and I have been trying to teach our kids not to interrupt us when we are talking. Interestingly enough, they have been pretty good about not interrupting us when talking to other adults for years now, but they just can't grasp the fact at times, that parents need to talk without interruption!
So, we made this rule, that they needed to wait for a 3 second pause in our conversation before they could, ideally, say "Excuse me?" and get our attention. After a while we had to change the rule to 5 seconds because, guess what? Children count really fast.
As most kids do, sometimes rules are forgotten, so recently we've had to do a major crackdown on this rule. We reiterated that they can't just be interjecting random things not pertaining to the conversation while we are talking and they need to be patient before talking.
So, there Tyler and I were one night, fully into a conversation about some scheduling issue, when Isaac blurted out "I CAN'T REMEMBER SOMETHING. "
Honestly, friends, I tried not to be irritated. So I reminded Isaac of the rule and then asked what he wanted.
"Oh, yeah, sorry, I was just needing to know how many seconds I need to wait before I could say Excuse Me."
I laughed and was annoyed at the same time. I said, "It's five seconds, did you interrupt to ask me that?"
"Okay," I said. "Do you see how that doesn't really make sense?"
