We are happy to share the following story and series of pictures with you :)
We were in Rio for about a week. Every day was as glorious as the next; we'd tour through the beaches and city, hang our with our new Rio friends, and swim our days away in pure bliss. Oh, also, we'd do some sessions. From each spot in the city we could see the Christ the Redeemer statue clear as a bell through gorgeous blue and cloudless skies, and every day I'd say, "Let's go up and see that today."
And every day we'd end up swimming and lazily taking walks on the beach instead. But finally, the trip was drawing to an end; so we had very little time to go up the giant hill and see the statue. I was really looking forward to this, personally, while Tyler was content to just see it from afar.
We got great advice on how to see the statue and surrounding areas from the locals on our last day in Rio, and headed out mid-morning. It was another gorgeous day. We drove up the hilly terrain taking in the sights of only 1 of 2 urban rainforests in the world. (We love rainforests and hope to visit as many as we can.)(The other urban rainforest is in Singapore... check!)
As we drew nearer to the statue, clouds rolled in. Clouds also rolled in on my good mood and I became pretty irate. How could this happen? Clouds? This was some kind of joke.
But, no. Clouds completely covered the statue when we arrived and so we decided to save our money and view it from far away, but still closer than we could see it from the city. But even from our new spot, we couldn't see the statue.
We gave up. Piled back into the car, kind of pizzed, kind of laughing at our foolishness for putting this off for so long.
When we got back to the bottom of the mountain, we drove past a little break in the trees and scenery and saw the statue, trying to give us one last chance. How nice. Do you see it?
Rio is in my top 3 favorite cities in the world. It is simply gorgeous. Put it on your list of places to travel. Put it on the top. And when you get there and concur that it is a stunningly beautiful place, say out loud, "Wendy and Tyler really know what they are talking about. And they are good looking."
Say it three times.
And then go visit the rest of Brazil too, because frankly, Brazil doesn't get enough credit for being freaking magnificent.
