Arm Rests

I had prepared to write a post about elbow etiquette.  A very nuanced discussion on the art of sharing an armrest.

You see, last time we flew to Australia, there was a man that had no idea about proper armrest etiquette.  I was on the aisle.  Wendy was at my side.  This goober was draped over her armrest.

I really wanted to tell him off.  Wendy thought it would be awkward to sit right by someone for another fifteen hours that I had just chewed out.  Pansy.

This time, I decided to deal with my rage midflight by posting about it.  I had some really biting material.  All of you armrest hoggers would hold your head in shame.  But something happened that changed my life forever.  Replaced my bitter rage with love for all mankind.

The sky couch.

What sweet goodness is this?  Exactly.

Remember when you were a kid and thought, you know what would be awesome?  If this couch that I was sitting on would fly.  Don’t pretend that you didn’t wish for this.  It is unseemly.

Well, friend, it has happened.  It has really happened.

Air New Zealand, you beautiful thing.

We boarded our flight at 11:00 p.m.  Red eye.  Last time we had done the same.  The flight had been packed.  The hogger kept us up.  It was not good.

This time we entered an almost empty cavern.

After takeoff, the stewardess came by and told us we were welcome to lay down on the empty couch.

Ahh, how cute, they call chairs couches.  Kiwis, you are cute.

But, laying down on an airline seat, unlikely.

She then performed some voodoo on a row of seats to convert them into a couch.

A flying miracle couch.

Isaac curled up with Wendy on one row.  Isabelle and I took another.

I drifted off to sleep.

I was awakened by a full blown hobbit attack.  The creature was both vicious and insanely quick.  I was punched and kicked 187 times in the space of ten seconds.

Entirely awake now, I realized that it was Isabelle, not a hobbit.  I did not realize how she moved so quickly or why she hit me so repeatedly.  I moved to my own sky couch and slept another eight hours.

Best flight ever.
