The Confession Part 2: A Concrete Example

I arrive to a candied frenzy.  Six tables.  Four kids per.  One to two

parents per kid.  And about five pounds of candy building material per

person.

There is complete order among Isaac and his peers.  The M&Ms are for

paths, not consuming.  The Candy Canes are for rain gutters, trees and

sleds, but absolutely not for licking.  Each kid is hard at work.

Isaac has frosting on his forehead.

Threat Level blue.

I am about ten minutes late.  Isaac has started without me.  He has

already put the graham crackers on the milk carton unassisted.

Threat Level Yellow

I begin to beam. However, I keep it under control.

Deep breath.  I help him frost some peppermints at his request.  I

decide that I will provide labor, but no artistic guidance.  While it

is true that I make a magnificent ginger bread house, I figure that

this is not the point of the exercise.

He engineers a snow man out of marshmallows, pez, and licorice.

Threat Level Orange.

I am proud.  I don’t dare offer verbal praise as my voice might shake,

so I opt for the time honored thumb up.

To this point, I have not spoken with any other parent.  I do not want

to shame my family with a shaky voice.  I mean, no one else seems to

be losing it over the construction.

The thumb up draws a closed mouth smile from the mom across the table.

Isaac notices this.  He sees this as an opportunity to initiate

conversation.

“This is my dad.”

“Oh, that is nice,” replies half smiler.

“He is the most handsome man in the world.” Isaac states.

Threat Level Red.  Teary eyes imminent.

My handsomeness is simple fact to him.  I had already had to resort to

sign language over a misshapen snowman.

The woman glances back up at me to see how she had missed my extreme

handsomeness.  She is greeted by a grinning idiot with an escaping

tear.
