While in Sacramento a few weeks back for sessions, I begged and begged one of my girlfriends to introduce me to meet a family I'd heard of but never met. This family of EIGHT was undergoing a difficult trial, to say the least. The mother, Kaci, was diagnosed with Small Cell Cancer back in May. This type of cancer is ruthless, and I'll quote what Kaci wrote on her blog after she found out what she had:
"The prognosis is poor. According to the documents that the doctor gave us to read,
from the time of diagnosis: the median range of survival is 8 to 13 months, less
than 5% of patients survive 2 years and 1 - 2% of patients survive 5 years."
Try to imagine the shock. I can't even begin to imagine it. I would be so angry and scared and feel so small and helpless. Kaci, however, faced this trial straight on. In her very next paragraph, she wrote:
"Now for the good news. I am NOT a statistic. I refuse to be a statistic. I fully intend
to blow those statistics out of the water and surprise everyone. David and I and our
families believe in a higher power that can do anything. We have faith that our Father
in Heaven will take care of us however He feels is the best. Please keep praying for
us. I know that it helps and we can use all the help we can get."
Wow. That's the amazing woman I've come to know in the last few weeks. She and her family are an example to us all, showing us how to put your energy into being positive and fighting for life.
Her words are more than inspirational. Her life is more than a miracle. Her family isn't taking things one step at a time; they are charging forward with an eye to a happy future.
And you can see it in their pictures.
